Fluke & Porgy Limits to Increase In 2011

Long Island Sound West:
City Island, Little Neck, Manhasset & Western Sound:
Jack's Bait & Tackle (718-885-2042)
: John DeCuffa reports they will NOT be renting the rental skiffs on Friday or Saturday (9/4) because of the storm and the left over remnants. They will be renting for Sunday and of course Labor Day. The area is loaded with porgies and no problem getting limits of porgies. Snappers off all the docks and bulkheads with porgies and snappers too in all the areas on the rental skiffs. On the porgy front they are catching large porgies by Sand's Point, Prospect Point, Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, The #2 Buoy, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Rye.  These fish are hiding from the big bluefish so you need to find an area where there are no bluefish and there will be porgies.  Anchoring up in about 20 feet of water using plenty of Jack's fresh clam chum, jumbo sandworms and bloodworms, fresh clams and squid.  This fishing will continue to get better as the water temperature increases and then decreases in the month of September.

Blues re-appeared for the bluefish contest this past weekend and they did weigh in the 2nd Place winner of over 15 pounds. A few blues did show the Whitestone Bridge and the other bridges too on Saturday (8/21). Look for them to reappear by Mamaroneck, Rye, Buoy 42 and in the channel behind Execution Lighthouse. Fluke in the local areas Pea Island, Hart's Island, Big Tom, the barges, the bridges, Sands Point, Prospect Point, Hewlett Point and any kind of structure in the middle of the channels.  Best bait is Jack's famous spearing, sand eels and gorgeous cut squid.  A meal fit for a king and also a large fluke!

Hours are now 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day now. Jack's is fully stocked for all of your fishing needs for this 2010 fishing season! All of Jack's Motor Boat rentals will be ready to sail and you can rent boats for the same price they've had for several years now $50 on weekdays and $60 weekends from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Come on down and see Big John and the Boys at Jack’s! Till then watch Jack’s Whacky You Tube videos on his web site at www.jacksbaitandtackle.com

Long Island Sound West:
City Island:
Riptide III (718-885-0236
):
Capt. John Jorgensen of the Riptide III says they are making a schedule change and discontinuing the Thursday fluke trips. From this point forward they will only porgy fish on the daytime trips 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They will see porgies, sea bass, some fluke, blues & bass come over the rails but the target is porgies from here on out. Meanwhile weather kept them at the dock early in the week but they did sail Wednesday & Thursday (8/26) and the porgy fishing has been super-duper. Plenty of keepers and then some as it has been slaughter fishing with fish to almost 3 pounds. They sail full day every day for porgies 8 a.m. to 4:30. On the web at www.Riptide3.com.

The night bluefish trip did get out on Wednesday night and the action was much better than it had been. Fifteen anglers had about 50 bluefish to 10-12 pounds. The night bluefishing continues to hold up right into the weekend as Friday saw 15 anglers score more than 50 bluefish as things seem to be picking up then pace with the cooler weather. These trips sail 6:30 p.m. to a little after midnight.

The Riptide III is a 90 foot long and 24 foot wide fishing vessel powered with three (3) Mann diesels that produce 2,400 horsepower. Long Island Sound Middle: John Richey joins Rich Johnson weekly, live on The Fishing Line Radio Show Saturday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. to give current and live updated reports for the Huntington to Kings Park & Stony Brook areas.

Cold Spring / Huntington / Northport / Smithtown / Kings Park / Stony Brook:
Saturday afternoons 4:35 p.m. & Thursday evenings at 6:45 on TFL Radio on 1240AM WGBB.

Terminal Tackle (631-269-6005)Terminal Tackle: John Richey reported customers were scarce the last day or two, but porgy fishing is incredible. Porgy action is the best bet and the action insane as they weighed in very, very big porgies of 2 to 3-1/2 pounds. Plenty of huge fish and non stop action. They were in 20 to 25 foot of water. Any rock pile or structure with fish at the Brush pile but they seemed to move deep and evacuated Crane's Neck. Porgies tight to the beach in 5 to 10 foot of water at first light and into sunrise. These are real nice 2 to 2-1/2 pound porgies on worms or clams. Once the sun is really up they slide off but not that deep, perhaps 15 to 20 foot of water. They are spreading rapidly with porgies at any mussel bed, the Golf Course, Brush Pile & Target Rock…just about anywhere. Best advice is just go porgy fishing!

Some big bluefish now in fairly close to the beaches and you have to wait them out as they feed on the porgy schools as bunker are AWOL. Bluefish are virtually everywhere especially down at the river mouth. No problem finding all the 1 to 4 pound bluefish you want anywhere in LI Sound. Fluking is just about over with only a few shorts laying around, with a doormat or two maybe being found by accident. A surprise in all the harbors this year is a good run of blue claw crabs. Good sizes and good numbers too!! Snappers now with 1/2 pound blues mixed in and porgies at the docks and piers in the bay too. Listen to John's Fall Blackfishing Tips Here. They're open on their normal schedule of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closing at 2 p.m. on Sundays. On the web at www.terminaltackleco.com.

James Joseph II (631-680-8159 or 631-651-8235):  Capt. James Schneider reports they started full day porgy fishing today (9/1) and it couldn’t be any better., limits in a half hour as 37 anglers stormed the boat and al took home limits of p0rgies, some sea bass, a few fluke were caught and of course cocktail blues. Great fishing right now even though it was broiling on the water. They also had 13 Osprey coupons…remember they are honoring any Port Jefferson boat coupons so bring them down. They sail full day porgy and sea bass fishing 7 a.m.

The afternoon bluefish trips at 4:30 continue to sparkle with the exception of Friday (8/27). The weekend was excellent and same on Monday & Tuesday (8/31). The 4:30 p.m. trips are now for bluefish and bass. On the web at www.JamesJosephFishing.com.

The Capt. James Joseph was featured on The Fishing Line Television program 16th season premier on Saturday (5/1) with a terrific bluefish jigging show done last October with a whole bunch of Fishing Line fans off the web site. The Capt. James Joseph has been featured many times over the last 15 years including 2009 season with Sandworming LI Sound Bass and again for Spring Blackfish with Clams back in 2005. You really should pick up these Fishing Line DVD with Capt. James Schneider on bass, blues and also how to catch . Order yours here ONLY $10.

James Joseph III (631-680-8159 or 631-651-8235): They ran charters Wednesday evening and slaughtered the porgies with scup to almost 3 pounds. Thursday morning they did another porgy charter and they had non stop fishing. the porgy fishing in the Sound right now is insane. On Friday (8/27) Rich Johnson of The Fishing Line set up a trip with Channel 7's weatherman Bill Evans. Bill Evans' brother David from MS was in town and never fished for anything other than bream and largemouth. They hammered the blues of 1 to 4 pounds in non stop action at times. Along for the action was Bill Evans' son William, age 14, who also had a hot hand in the massacre. We had 35 blues per drift at times because we could fish the shallows. Rich Johnson filmed it and it will be on Channel 7's weather forecasts Tuesday through Thursday September 7-9 when Bill Evans returns from vacation. On the web now at www.jamesjosephfishing.com.

Long Island North Fork:
Greenport:
Peconic Star II (631- 289-6899 & 631-875-2631): Capt. Dave Brennan reports they sailed on Wednesday & Thursday (8/26) after a few days at the dock because of weather. Fishing was excellent both days.  Wednesday they had a guy catch a 12 pound fluke using a #2 porgy hook. His name was David Turner of Brooklyn, NY. Porgy fishing was very good both Wednesday and Thursday. They had quite a few sea bass on Thursday (8/26) as well. Nice size porgies and lots of big fish. Alex Skaelos of Northville, NJ had 19 inch porgy that was over 3 pounds! They porgy fish daily at 7:30 a.m. from the Greenport Railroad Dock and return at 3:30 p.m. Lots of safe and FREE parking! On the web at www.peconicstar.com. Listen To Capt. Dave Brennan on the new Peconic Star Express

Capt. Dave Brennan has been featured on The Fishing Line TV Show scoring big time on giant porgies. You can order the extended home release video which is longer than the 30 minute show version by clicking the link. After sailing on the Peconic Star II, we're sure you will agree that there is no finer fishing vessel.

Should they ever get around to giving awards for the friendliest and most helpful crew aboard a party boat, Fishing Line Message Boardsthe crew on the Peconic Star II will get the blue ribbon for sure. Forever preoccupied with making every trip a pleasant and personal adventure, one not soon forgotten; the crew leaves nothing to chance, from instructions for the novice and the rigging up, to cleaning your catch ready for the skillet. The crew insures that not only the fishermen enjoy their trip, but the families as well… so bring the kids and Mom along… it's always fun and a big thrill for them. Don't forget the camera, and if you don't fish, come along for a delightful ride and enjoy the scenic delights of Long Island's last outpost of natural beauty. On the web at www.peconicstar.com.

Peconic Star Express (631-875-2631): Capt. Rob Spitzenberg reports they sailed on Wednesday (8/18) with a light crowd and the fishing was very good to super with mostly bluefish in the 6 to 13 pound class in the Gut. They had a few bass with a handful of keeper bass and handful of shorts with the largest about 34 inches. As many blues as your arms could handle with non stop action on the jig and three way bucktails, just like in the TV show. Thursday they sailed with another light crowd and fishing was about the same with bluefishing just as good but the bass action nonexistent with  just too many blues. They fished three different spots and the bluefish have just taken over the whole place. They are striped bass fishing Wednesday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. They sail the evening trips Friday & Saturdays 4 to 10 p.m. and they do accept charters for day or night striper trips. Listen To Capt. Dave Brennan on the new Peconic Star Express.

In case you did not know it, they added a second boat the Peconic Star Express (see below), a beauty of 80 foot and 150 passenger and larger than the main fluke boat you see in the reports. It is for all intent and purposes…a brand new boat condition wise and looks wise. The day trips are for bass & bluefish with $95 adults, $85 seniors and $55 for kids 12 and under. As for the night trips for the special 25 person maximum allowed for bass it is $110. They will not fish on this vessel Sunday though Tuesdays as they run Block Island excursions leaving Greenport at 8 a.m. and leaving Block Island at 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesdays. This means you can stay over night at Block Island and come home Tuesday evening on the 5 p.m. boat. This also means you do not have to drive through the Hamptons to get to the Block island Ferry. You actually save time by driving the shorter route to Greenport and taking the Peconic Star Express to Block Island. Check the web site www.PeconicStarFleet.com.

Southold to Orient:
Fishing overall is a hit or miss affair and based all on where the bait is. Porgies will bite for a while and then turn off and on again based on whatever. No one seems to be able to figure that out. There is no shortage of bluefish and some nice ones too at 8 to 14 pounds, but Steve at WeGo says no one really wants to go fishing for them for whatever reason. Bass fishing locally is so-so with more folks running to Montauk where the bass bite is hot with 25 to 45 pound bass. Fluking too see locals going the distance to Montauk for the better fluke bite. We are getting into typical August fishing now.

Know where they are...not where they were...
