JR has been been living in New Jersey over 25 years and fishing for 15
years. JR concentrates on central fishing areas like Barnegat Inlet,
Manasquan Inlet, Island Beach State Park (IBSP) but travels up and down the
coast to get some other fishing in when he can. You can usually find his
07' Silverado on the sand in Island Beach from Friday until Sunday morning
during the summer. I target the big four fish in Jersey, but loves offshore
tuna trips in September and November. Light spinning tackle and bait are
his top favorites, but wants to get into saltwater fly and spear fishing
this summer. JR also enjoys freshwater fishing but I hasn't found too many
good bass spots in central NJ as of yet. One thing JR adds to his fishing
articles and reports is a science background, having a vocational degree in
Marine and Environmental Science and that helps when JR writese. Other than
that, I guess you can say I fish most of the year but my schedule holds me
back from fishing as much as I want to...like the rest of us!
This report from November 30, was the last report for the CT section of our web site for the 2008
season...
we will update this from time to time as conditions and fishing allow us
through the winter.
Overview
:
Most anglers caught
keeper bass this week by a river mouth or an inlet.
Bait shops are reporting big catches but nothing earth shattering so far.
Large cows have been caught but a windy, cold day on the water
was a tough sell this week.
Blackfish numbers are down,
but this may be due to weather or a lack of fish
over 8 pounds. Togging
seemed to slow down somewhat, but big fish are
still in these waters.
Westernmost CT: Jigging is still a
dominating force in western Connecticut. Bass
anglers have found nice stripers at the #15 Buoy
and some over 30 pounds in deep water. Bluefish are still present in this
area but most action has revolved around finding thick bait schools.
Blackfish to 11 pounds are also available, but many anglers are either not
fishing or just plain stubborn about giving up their secret spot.
Bridgeport
to Stratford:
Bluefish have been caught in deeper water all
week. Most anglers are targeting bass and find a few medium sized bluefish
mixed in with striper schools. Deep water has also been a good spot for
blackfish as big tog have been pulled from wrecks all week. Fact is many
reefs and wrecks are littered with blackfish, but
pool winners are few and far between. Striped bass are sticking close to
beaches as they did last week. Blackfish are still at the
Breakwaters on green crabs, but anglers
might want to try inshore if the wind continues to beat up boats.
New Haven
to Madison: A slow bass bite has
been the word in this area,
but keepers are loosely holding at offshore reefs. Jigging is by far a prime
choice for both stripers and bluefish. AVA’s and tin squids are among top
lures this week. Be sure to try bait as well with many bass coming in to
build up their protein for a fall run. Fresh clams are doing better then
they did last week and might be a good idea since last week brought a lot of
rain into the area.

Eastern
CT:
CT River and the Race:
Schoolie bass are taking bait in places like Long
Sand Shoal. Most bluefish schools are presently moving
out with fish to 8 pounds on tins or
chunked bunker. Blackfish numbers have been OK but larger tog are now being
found in deeper water. Bass fishermen are still catching fish over 20 pounds
but bring plenty of fresh clams for the ride. River entrances are holding
high concentrations of bait with bunker of all sizes being snagged on
weighted trebles.
Niantic
Bay and Thames River:
Blackfish seems to be a steady bet in eastern
Connecticut. Local rock piles are holding steadfast with a few double digit
fish in the mix. A good idea is to load up on white leggers this week. Many
anglers found a good shift to them over a traditional green crab. A few
bluefish schools have been spotted off of Long Island but most of these fish
are heading out to sea and fast.
