Fluke & Porgy Limits to Increase In 2011

Overview:

Western CTFishing Line Message Boards: The sand eels are really starting to pop from Milford to Greenwich, while there is a fare share of silver sides in the mix as well. As for bunker, they are spotty, but when you find them, it is usually a strong showing. Many of the blues being  caught regurgitated 3-inch sand eels on their way to the boat, and the fluke had fresh silver sides in the mouth as well, all good signs of strong bait presence. Outside of the Housatonic River the dusk/night bite has been on fire. Fluke is relatively slow in this area so stick to blues and bass in close to the mouth of the Saugy and the Housey.

Bridgeport to Stratford: Bass have been taken outside about ¾ of a mile off the beach. Big stripers have been caught in and around the mouth of the Housatonic River. Anglers are also scoring with live bunker, bucktails and fresh bunker. Striper action at the mouth of the Housey has been slower than last week with reports of less bait in the water. Bluefish numbers are in the 7 to 12-pound class around the river mouth. Fluke numbers are low this week, but keepers were pulled from Buoy #20 in the Stratford River. Try to avoid New Haven were the keeper ratio in about 20:1. Porgy action out at Charles Island has been decent in about 40 feet of water.

New Haven to Madison: The Branford River is still the best bet to catching bass this week. New Haven Harbor has been producing fish, but not as many as last week. Bucktails and fresh bunker are working off the surf, but plastic eels have been good inside the Branford River. Jeff Hawthorne caught two bass topping out at 37 inches from New Haven Harbor. Bluefish seem to be pushing bunker pods around all the major reefs in the area. Fluke reports are null and void this week with colder water and overfishing being the main culprits. Porgy action is still producing well around the New Haven area. Stick to the rocky areas and you’ll score a hump back porgy in no time.

Eastern CT:
CT River and The Race: The bass at the mouth of the Connecticut River went of their diets this week and have been snacking on eel imitators and the usual fare. Smaller bass in the River have been scant with the predominant sizes running between one and two feet. School bass up to keeper size are making an appearance on some of the beaches and near shore reefs from Clinton to Waterford. Larger blues are scattered not schooled in the Connecticut River. There have been some nice sized fluke caught at Montauk and Peconic as well as some of the near spots.

Niantic Bay & Thames River: Inner Bartlett’s Reef has been on point for nice bass all week. The Race has also been good, but diamond jigs are the key to catching bigger bass. Trolling off of Black Point is really good right now. Bluefish action has been quiet due to the lack of bunker schools in the area. Porgy has also been slow and out of character for the week. Fluking has been “just OK” as most shops report. Try off of Isabella for a chance at keeper fish. Humpback porgies are still on tap for this week with more weigh-ins coming across the scales.
